President's Report
From the President’s Desk……
Nathan Stalker

Welcome to another ASHRAE year. Before anything else, I need to thank Mike Daly for his dedication and hard work as last year’s Detroit AHSRAE president. We had a great year and that is only accomplished through the work of many volunteers. Thank you to Mike Daly, the Board of Governors, Committee Chairs and all volunteers! ASHRAE wouldn’t be what it is without all of you!
Also, a special thank you to Jeff Krieg and Derek Crowe for heading up the ASHRAE resource promotion campaign for last year and Paul Joliat for once again heading up the golf outing. The golf outing is a major contributor to the overall resource promotion campaign. The Detroit Chapter made a total contribution to ASHRAE of $24,769. We exceeded our goal and achieved High 5 Goal (highest total in past 5 years), Challenge Goal (+5% of High 5) and the High 5 Award (largest amount over a 5 year period). Great Job! Way to Go! Thanks again to everyone who contributed.
We’ve already had our 1st meeting of the year, which was used to celebrate and congratulate our many award winners from the Chapter. Thank you to Filza Walters, Janice Means and the LTU ASHRAE student chapter for hosting the event and helping with everything. It was a great evening. If you were not able to attend, be sure to read all about it in the September meeting recap. Don’t forget, our next meeting is coming up October 20, 2015 at the San Marino Club in Troy. We are having a joint meeting with SMACNA. The SMACNA National Technical Director, Eli Howard will be presenting on the SMACNA HVAC Commissioning Systems 2nd ed. 2013.
I want to remind everyone that registration is now open for the ASHRAE winter meeting in Orlando, FL. This happens in January in conjunction with the AHR trade show. More information is available on the ASHRAE Society website.
I’m pleased to be able to serve as your president for the upcoming year. We have lots of great things instore for the year, including our 100 year anniversary celebration. The Detroit Chapter of ASHRAE reaches the 100 year mark on February 5th, 2016 and we’re planning a gala celebration (May 6, 2016) to commemorate the milestone. We have a full series of meetings and/or technical tours in the works for the upcoming year, many of which will provided PDHs. I’m looking forward to another great year for Detroit ASHRAE. And, one final note, we are always looking for additional help on many of the committees. If you would like to help out, please contact myself or any of the committee chairs.

Chapters Regional Conference
Chapters Regional Conference Recap
This year, the Region V Chapters Regional Conference (CRC) was held on August 6th through the 8th in Evansville, IN. There were five members from the Detroit Chapter in attendance. Mike Daly and I attended as Delegate and Alternate for the Detroit Chapter. Janice Means attended and serves as the Region V Student Activities Regional Vice Chair. Derek Crowe attended and served as the Region V Resource Promotion Regional Vice Chair. And, last but not least, Sonya Pouncy attended and serves as the Region V Grassroots Government Advocacy Committee Regional Vice Chair. The Detroit ASHRAE Chapter is very involved and well represented at the Regional and National level.
The technical tour for the CRC included a tour of a land fill gas processing facility and the boiler plant of the facility which purchases the landfill gas. The landfill gas processing facility draws the gas out of the wells at the adjacent landfill, cleans it, dries it, compresses it and delivers it, through about 5 miles of piping, to the high pressure steam boiler plant at a Mead Johnson Nutrition Co. production facility (Mead Johnson Nutrition produces the Enfamil brand of baby nutritional products). The boiler plant consists of three 800 hp steam boilers delivering steam at 324 psi to the facility. The boilers are outfitted to burn a mixture of 80% landfill gas/20% natural gas. It was an interesting tour, which shed some light on how landfills operate and how they’ve developed processes to use the byproducts; if the gas is not recovered, it must be burnt off.
Next year’s CRC will be hosted by the Dayton, OH chapter. All committee chairs and board members are encouraged to attend. Registration is open to all ASHRAE members is a great opportunity to see how ASHRAE works above the chapter level.
Past Meeting Recap
September Meeting Recap
September’s Detroit ASHRAE meeting was “Honors and Awards Night”. The meeting was hosted by the Lawrence Technological University (LTU) ASHRAE Student Chapter. Thank you to Filza Walters, Janice Means and the members of the LTU ASHRAE student chapter which helped with the meeting. The LTU ASHRAE Student Chapter is a great group of students and they were very helpful in preparing the meeting room, taking pictures, cleaning up when were finished, etc.

Detroit ASHRAE 100 Year Gala
Save The Date!
The Detroit Chapter Celebrates 100 Years!
Friday May 6th, 2016
With a rich history of great designs and innovative systems coming from the chapter members of ASHRAE Detroit, there is a lot to be proud of! As we reach the centennial mark for our local chapter, we also celebrate Detroit as one of the great comeback cities in the United States.
Please set aside the evening of Friday May 6th, 2016 on your calendar for The Detroit Chapter Centennial Gala. We will be celebrating with all of our members, young and old, engineers, architects, contractors, building owners, ASHRAE society dignitaries, manufacturer’s representatives, students and retirees. All those that make our Detroit Chapter great as well as their husbands, wives and significant others that have been and will continue to be a huge part of our chapters strength are invited to celebrate together.
A committee is being formed now to plan the finer details of our celebration and the committee welcomes any volunteers to help with the planning. Please call or E-mail Paul Prentice of R.L. Deppmann Co. to help out. A bigger committee makes for an awesome party and happy committee members. Any small way that you can contribute your help will be appreciated. If even just thoughts of venues and types of entertainment you might have would be great. There will be opportunities for event sponsorships of all sizes to help with the gala.
