President's Report

From the President's Desk

Patrick Michels

Thank you to Thermalnetics for hosting another successful event at Detroit Fleat in Ferndale.  The speaker provided an overview to the updated commercial Michigan energy code as it pertains to ASHRAE 90.1.  We thank Tom Rice for dedicating his time to the Detroit ASHRAE group.

We do not have a November chapter meeting, but we do have a great YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE) event lined up for Nov. 6th at the HUB in Auburn Hills.  Axe throwing and beers, sounds like a great combination.  You never know when a skill like this can come in handy!

Part of the YEA event is a focus on membership promotion.  I know our Membership Chair (Jillian Dare) and Co-Chair (Kurt Cunningham) have come up with great prize ideas for those who bring potential ASHRAE members.  I look forward to seeing you at this event.

December 6th is our annual Holiday dinner.  This year we have Consumers Energy to thank for sponsoring our event.  Please check your email as meeting details and topic will be announced shortly.

One last thing to mention, ASHRAE on a national level, provides a scholarship to a high school senior and I am honored to say this years recipient is from the Metro Detroit area.  I had the pleasure of meeting this young man, Aaron Ustes, at our April meeting at the Little Caesars arena.   As a high school student he had a strong conviction to work in the HVAC industry and showed me a study he did at his local church.  I was honored to recommend him to receive this scholarship and thrilled he was awarded it.  Congrats Aaron!

Have a safe Thanksgiving and we will see you again soon!

ASHRAE Research

Seventhwave compares ASHRAE 90.1-2010 vs. 2004, looks for sample buildings

Seventhwave is looking for buildings for an ASHRAE research project. We need to compile a sample of middle schools, high schools and 2 to 4 story office buildings from around the country that were designed to comply with ASHRAE 90.1-2010 (or equivalent) or ASHRAE 90.1-2004 code (or equivalent). If you know any such building (name, address, contact information, etc.) and would like to help the project, please contact the Principal Investigator Dr. Joe Zhou at, or fill out a simple, two-minute online survey: here. We will then contact the building owner or designer for additional information.

ASHRAE research project 1814-RP, “Actual Energy Performance of Secondary Schools and Medium Offices Designed to Comply with ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010,” will study basic building data including actual monthly energy use of 168 secondary schools and medium offices in 14 climate subzones across the U.S. The comparison mainly will be based on actual energy cost analysis, with supporting building energy modeling, energy audits, and surveys of construction, facility, and operations staff. The study will be used to determine common factors among best and worst buildings and to provide recommendations for future energy codes and standards developments.
