President's Report

From the President’s Desk……

Kelly Sugg, PE

ASHRAE has been significant and constant for me the past ten years. I first got involved with the Detroit chapter after graduating from college and have been involved since. When I attended my first meeting, I traveled with a coworker to the new Henry Ford Hospital for a tour of the mechanical room followed by a dinner with a large attendance. It was during that meeting I learned the importance of networking with individuals across the market and participating in these events, and it was ASHRAE that brought everyone together to enjoy the evening.

Soon after, I got involved with research promotion and held the position for a few years. In the following years, I served as the Student Activities chair, was on the Board of Governors, and served as Secretary. I have always found value in ASHRAE as a member and have placed a high importance on staying in touch with my colleagues in the organization. I have developed many relationships with great people in the industry by attending meetings and volunteering within this group, and now I am happy to serve as your 2019/20 Chapter President.

I have set out to accomplish a few goals throughout my year as Chapter President. I will be working to maintain and grow our strong membership and find additional volunteers to continue our great programs and committees. I will prioritize continuing to engage students and young engineers in the area to join our membership while maintaining our past industry partnerships, such as those with ASPE and SMACNA. We have also been in touch with the Ann Arbor and Detroit 2030 districts to setup a joint meeting with hopes to continue collaboration in the future.

Your Programs Chair has been hard at work this summer and has already set up this year’s agenda. We plan to have a few different meeting formats through the year. We will kick off the meetings on September 10th with our gracious host, SMACNA Detroit, at the Sheet Metal Workers Local 80 Training Center. We are fortunate to be joined by Eli Howard, who will speak about duct fitting standards and perform an exhaust demonstration. Following the technical session, there will be an open house with demonstrations highlighting various concentrations of sheet metal industry. Meeting dates have been determined and posted so be sure to mark your calendars.

This will be a significant year as we turn to a new decade. Here’s to a successful ASHRAE calendar year and I
look forward to serving you.

Best Regards,
